“you can just watch panthers singles matches against Bryan Danielson and Hechicero and you would get why he’s so great. But that would be doing him a disservice. CMLL tags have almost become a factory in their ability to turn out great matches on the regular but it’s because they have wrestlers like panther who can still go that they have become that. “ ~ Padraig

“In a lot of ways, Blue Panther feels like a wrestler in his 60s, especially when you see what he looks like in his 30s, 40s, and 50s. There is a certain spring that has left the step. Which other ways, makes every moment feel more earned. Every dive takes that much more to push through and hit with the necessary force. Every kick to the chest he takes stings all that much more. The skin doesn’t repair quite as easily as it used to, the bruises show quicker and they show longer. It doesn’t seem real that we got Panther in the ring multiple times with Bryan Danielson. Add on he got to be in there with the greatest wrestler on the planet in Hechicero, it was a fitting final chapter for Panther. Sure, he didn’t retire but if this was the final spark of life before the fire turns into ember, then it sure felt as good as it could.” ~ Sam DiMascio

“Did not expect a 63-year-old Blue Panther to be one of the best wrestlers of the entire year, but here we are.” ~ Stephen W.

“This man found the fountain of youth in 2024. He elevated his game to a level it hasn’t been in years, technical, graceful, and just the right amount violent. He almost certainly won’t reach these levels again, and I wish I could’ve brought myself to rank him number one. But his dance partner Hechicero was just undeniable.” ~ Dan Rice

“I feel that Swerve elevated himself more outside of the ring this year, but a world title reign full of (mostly) great opponents was enough for him to make my list. “ ~ Stevan S.

“I actually voted him at the top of this poll in 2022 when he emerged onto the scene of AEW and immediately grabbed my attention, working as a slick, but also overtly vicious and determined technician. There were moments specifically in some of the tags with Keith Lee where he earnestly reminded me of Rat Boy Ogawa. His work in 2023 after completely transitioning to singles had bright spots but overall was a bit of a letdown as it felt like his matches began to lose the conviction behind the idiosyncrasies in his game as he slowly conformed to the broader, insipid framework of workrate in his environment. Luckily in 2024, he totally rose to the occasion and translated that vitality once again, layering the tangible physical strokes with cohesive, engaging narratives. In the best AEW world title reign to date, he wore versatility on his sleeve showing he could go traditional babyface and work a territory slow-burn with Christian Cage, toe-to-toe with Will Ospreay in a kung fu steeze battle, or return to my favorite iteration of him–the torturous, cruel malcontent, revived by a mission obligating the end of Bryan Danielson’s career. This guy’s ability to consistently wrestle with purpose and convey tactical intensity through his body language, focused offensive onslaught, and willingness to lay it all out there for brutal exclamation points make him stand out among the newer crop of main event pro wrestlers in a huge way.” ~ Flae

“the most likeable wrestler in the world had some great bouts against Kris Statlander and Mercedes mone. How she is not what the entire AEW women’s division is built around still baffles me.” ~ Padraig

“Belt her up already. “ ~ Stevan S.

“Maybe the greatest thing that AEW has ever done, is allow their women’s roster to have stipulation matches that equal the violence and usually surpass the quality of their male counterparts.

Willow Nightingale remained the beating heart of the best hard-core division in wrestling, in 2024. In a less misogynistic world she would be the racking up the WON Best Brawler awards.

She was able to add to her résumé, her best AEW match outside of the street fight environment (with Mercedes Moné). An equally good rematch surely beckons at some point, this time with Mercedes correctly cast as a villain and perhaps at a point in her run, where the outcome might be more in doubt. “ ~ Nick Yeoman

“Is there a better pure babyface in the world right now than Willow Nightingale? Genuinely struggle to think of one. Not only is everything about her just naturally babyface energy, but she has a way of tapping into the fire to overcome like very few can. When Willow goes from peril to control, it’s like you can feel her lock in. 2024 for her had a couple great peaks with the Moné match and the Statlander street fight, but she spent a lot of the year putting on very solid TV work. A couple fun as hell plunder matches with Skye Blue (singles and as a tag with Stat against the spooky girls) and a couple of rock solid Mariah May bouts support her case. While 2024 wasn’t everything it could have been for Willow with her taking a backseat in some of AEW’s booking, she proved why 2025 should be her year.” ~ Andy/Shrimp

” If you had to distill the moment that every wrestler in this top 100 cemented their case last year, none would be more obvious than Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander going out and tearing the roof off the NOW Arena directly following the one of, if not the best Will Ospreay match of the year. In a fair and just world, Willow would be dethroning Jon Moxley to become the new AEW World Champion right now.” ~ Stephen W.

“the wrestling genius ends his career with one of his strongest years. The conclusion to his rivalry with Thatcher and his retirement match with Kevin Ku stand out as highlights there’s plenty more gems with his bouts against Zack Saber Jr and Nichole Mattheews. Hopefully that coward Bryan Danielson accepts his challenge.” ~ Padraig

“I was incredibly late to his work, but it is a testament to how good he was to get so much out of his final run, despite being a newer fan. “ ~ Stevan S.

“A year with defined end date made it no less satisfying. I won’t pretend to hide my bias, it has been a true pleasure to see Makabe grow into this stage of becoming a true indie star. The final run saw him in a dream match, a finale to a rivalry I’ll hold close to my heart, and an ending benefitting of someone who took so much pride in his craft. There won’t be anyone quite like Dan for some time now.” ~ Sam DiMascio

“I’ll be honest here, I am not as familiar with the history of Daniel Makabe as most others who had him high. Having only seen a couple of his matches before 2024 (Thatcher and Matthews are the ones I can remember), I almost didn’t want to blurb about him. But I realized, the fact that he made it so high on my list even without much context for his big retirement* run says so much, both about his actual work and about how simple a story can be when it’s real. From the DEAN~!! main event with Thatch that felt like a grappling clinic, to the ZSJ match that felt like a very different kind of grapple masterclass, every time Makabe got on the mat he was able to wrap each bout with a different theme throughout his retirement*. Old rivals, dream matches, “love of the game” showcases like the Matthews match in front of one person at the Lion’s Gate Dojo, Daniel weaved his technical style through whatever emotion he needed me to feel. And the Ku match. My god what a way to go out*. Perhaps the most unique Daniel Makabe match of the year, but also perhaps the most cathartic one in a year full of goodbyes. Less grand than Sting, less painful than Bryan, Makabe and Ku take the simple approach: two friends killing each other one last* time. For a guy as real as Makabe is, keeping this match intimate and real is what makes it so emotional. Shout out to getting the blood going off a suicide dive that is sick as fuck. As someone who only became a true Makabe fan in 2024, it is truly impressive bringing me to tears in less than a year. If this is truly it, what a way to go. ***There has to be one VP reader who has Bryans contact into pls tell him to wrestle Makabe or hes a bitch.” ~ Andy/Shrimp

“In many ways the work Daniel Makabe did in 2024 was as great as its ever been. He had great matches that were thoughtful and detail oriented. He could work the mat in ways that were flashy or full of struggle. His matches could feel violent and unpredictable. But what set this year apart for Makabe was the emotion that bubbled underneath so many of his performances. Many of his matches felt like a farewell. Whether he was saying farewell to longtime rivals and classic opponents or to wrestling scenes that have become so connected to his work. 2024 was the year Makabe said goodbye to wrestling and he went out as one of the best wrestlers in the world.” ~ Conor S.

“”Wrestling genius” would feel gross as a nickname for 99.9% of wrestlers. Not for Daniel Makabe. He wrestled with quiet precision, but never let his matches feel boring or drawn out, they all had an emotional heft. He went out as the best wrestler on the indies. If he’d wrestled a full year, he probably would’ve been my number one. Wrestling is worse now that he’s gone. He will be missed.” ~ Dan Rice

“ROLL TIDE, BLITZ BALMA BLITZ, I DONT GIVE, I DON’T GIVE A PISS ABOUT NOTHIN’ BUT THE TIDE. Priest’s highlight of the year is his reign as DPW National Champion which stands as the promotion best reign of any championship and ends with a fantastic match with LaBron Kozone. Wrestlers like Priest are too rare these days. A special talent” ~ Padraig

“There might not be a more talented wrestler in the world. The only thing that held him back was not being put in situations where his special performances got to be part of special matches. Unfortunately, being that good makes you an incredible tool for any booker where they can make any wrestler they want look great. Why put Priest in positions to be his best possible self when he can make any wrestler you want look like the second coming?” ~ Sam DiMascio

“2024 was the year where DPW really defined its place as the best American independent promotion, and no single wrestler encapsulates what makes DPW different as much as Adam Priest. A very simple wrestler to describe, but someone who is so fully committed to being the heel that you can’t help but hop along for the ride every time. In 2024, Priest showed every other bad guy what it means to really become the bad guy, every single movement in every single match just feeding into “please hate me” perfectly. The series with Kozone and Blackwood show his narrative depth along a continuing story, but matches like the Slim J encounter at DEAN~!! and the Tanaka match at Super Battle prove that he can apply being a dick to plenty of different styles. “ ~ Shrimp

“The man wrestles with intensity and the one track mind of a dog with a bone. Every time Priest hits the ring, he brings urgency, stiffness, and the kind of real southern authenticity that never goes out of style.” ~ Dan Rice

“One of the most endearing wrestlers in the world, and one of half of one of the best tag teams in the world. “ ~ Stevan S.

“The best babyface in the world shows off her range this year, pulling her weight and then some in arguably the best tag team of the year alongside Yurika Oka as Bobu Bobu Momo Banana. The series against Team 200kg is one of the standouts of the year; anytime Mio and C-Hash lock up inside a wrestling ring, the results are electric. Add onto that the classic rematch with Ozaki in Oz Academy, plus the bevy of material working both on top and underneath in Sendai Girls and Marvelous, and you can count on less than one hand the number of wrestlers that had a better year than Our Heroine.” ~ Stephen W.

“As exuberant a babyface as existed in wrestling in 2024, Mio Momono had the great underdog performances in big title matches that you would expect, but what really sets her apart was the variety of performances she was able to give. She took Yurika Oka under her wing and they became one of the best tag teams in the world. She was able to play the veteran in matches with rookies, and she was able to stand tall against her contemporaries. She takes what are quickly becoming the most ubiquitous stylistic tics of her scene and makes them feel fresh and vibrant. She was one of the best wrestlers of 2024, and it feels like she’s still getting better.” ~ Conor S.

“Incredible underdog babyface, great tag wrestler, gets to face top talent often enough, and can even pull off being the vet in matches against newer wrestlers. not much else to say considering she’s been one of the beast in the world for quite some time now, and I doubt even being currently injured will stop her from ranking next time around.” ~ Greed

“Mitsico’s 25th anniversary year was a good (or even decent) Anniversario opponent, away from being a perfect year.

He had a plethora of great trios matches and a singles match with Hechicero that was among the best of the year.  When he wrestled in small venues it created an atmosphere similar to people seeing Jesus turn water into wine at their friend’s house party. He was even able to make MLW shows feel raucous!” ~ Nick Yeoman

“put the 2025 follow up stuff aside the early deathriders stuff was fantastic tv. Moxley’s performances in the matches against  Bryan and Darby are some of the best from any wrestler this year. That’s not to put down Moxley’s work earlier in the year. Sure theres a forgettable IWGP world heavyweight title reign but there’s also the brilliant Josh Barnett match “ ~ Padraig

“It’s baffling that Moxley became a scapegoat when the Deathriders angle went south, because the matches were still so great. Aside from the IWGP reign, there were few outright misses in his year, and the refocused heel work in autumn was some of the best things AEW has produced. “ ~ Stevan S.

“If “bjj Mox” is the Jon Moxley that gave us the Takagi, Barnett, Darby, and Bryan matches, then anyone who complains about bjj Mox is an idiot. Sure the valleys were pretty low, but fuck me his peaks were insane. Bloodsport Mox is a different animal, the dismantling of Darby was beautiful, and the way him and Dragon just full committed to unsatisfying heartbreak at Wrestledream was perfect. Even when his hit rate isn’t top tier, when Mox lands, he absolutely lands. Just his top 5 or 6 matches in 2024 clear many peoples whole years, I gotta say it.” ~ Andy/Shrimp
