The VP2010s Case for Black Terry

Months ago, the hosts of Violent People Radio asked listeners and the Discord community to vote on the ballot for the first-ever Violent People Hall of Fame class. Each host selected five names for the community to vote for, and the top 10 vote-getters would be inducted into the class.

Black Terry was a name that popped into mind for me. He might not be the most popular luchador in history, but as far as violent wrestlers go, Black Terry is one of the greats. While footage of his early career is scarce online, his late career as an old man taking and dealing punishment in equal measure into his 60s and 70s is a legendary run.

Black Terry ended up with 13 votes on 51 ballots, a paltry 25% of the vote. He wasn’t close to making our fake Hall of Fame. Many people had room left on their ballots, indicating that perhaps if they were more familiar with the legend, he could have slipped onto their lists.

Luckily, we have a chance to redeem ourselves as a community. The Violent People 2010s voting is STILL LIVE, and you have until December 1 to vote for your top 50 or 100 best wrestlers of that decade. That is also the decade where we have the most Black Terry footage available to us! Lucky us (though unlucky for us, some of the great matches are now private or deleted)!

If you were too young to follow every drop of new Black Terry footage from the last decade itself, or you just didn’t follow IWRG and indie lucha at the time, here are some matches for you to watch before you cast your votes. These remain some of the most crucial matches of the decade.

Black Terry vs. Wotan (Chilanga Mask, 8/21/2016)

Wotan is another luchador you should have on your list. This match from Coliseo Coacalco is a big reason why. There is palpable hatred in this match. The chops are absolutely brutal from both men. The chair shots are sickening. Black Terry and Wotan headbutt each other’s disgusting bloody faces and you never want it to end. This feels like a war. Every move feels designed to destroy the other, even if they destroy themselves in the process. By the time they’re stumbling on rocks and chairs through the crowd, you know it doesn’t matter if this match actually has a “winner.” This match was a revelation in 2016, and it still feels special now.

Black Terry vs. Chico Che (IWRG, 1/22/2012)

As far as I know, this match is not on Youtube, but it is available if you have an IWTV sub. Big Chico Che is another one of the true underrated lucha talents of the decade. Terry is working a bit more underneath than he was in the Wotan match which was more of an equal war. Chico Che has his eyes covered red as he swaggers around the ring soaking it all in. Black Terry isn’t going to tolerate this for long, and he has Chico praying for mercy as soon as he starts firing up. A great back-and-forth brawl with some more great chops, great punches, filthy headbutts and gnarly blood.

Black Terry vs. Hechicero (Chilanga Mask, 10/26/2014)

I’ve said plenty about Black Terry’s ability as a brawler so far, but he’s great on the mat as well. You don’t have a career like Terry’s without having a bunch of tricks up your sleeve in the way of holds. Here’s a prime example with him going hold for hold with a younger-but-just-as-brilliant Hechicero. The full match between the two also has some vintage Terry brawling, but it’s not public. Even so, I’ll take what I can get of two of the greats grappling.

Black Terry vs. Aero Boy (Luchando Libre, 6/10/2016)

Black Terry. Aero Boy. An apuestas match. A dimly lit gym. Heavy metal in the background. Grainy, shaky, footage. Local ads taking up the bottom third of the screen. Chops. Plastic lawn chairs. Dives. Blood. Is this peak? Is this what it’s all about? What could get better than this?

Black Terry vs. Demus (ANCLA WWCI, 6/24/2017)

AHAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD
